Thoughts about consulting, from my Facebook Blog
During the past year, many nonprofits have been challenged to stetch their fund development dollars. While some might have considered the cost savings of hiring an individual on a part time or contracted basis, often those with the most experience are priced out of range for small to mid-sized organizations. By sharing hours among several nonprofits at the same time, I am able to provide cost-effective services to nonprofits that need assistance on a shoestring.
Is this effective? I believe it is. I have been working with multiple organizations since 1998, providing components of their fund development tasks supporting the board, executive staff and even their full time development staffs. Things like grant writing, event planning and donor research can be farmed out to save you the cost of benefits and full time pay. Other development-related tasks can be accomplished outside the office by a consultant, as well. Marketing, writing newsletters and other copy are time consuming. Why have your staff spend hours on this, when a professional writer can create the right copy in half the time at half the price?
If you need to update your strategic plan I can provide the facilitation and write the plan as well. Often I've worked with organizations who hired a facilitator and when the evening was over, received nothing in writing. If I facilitate your strategic or resource development planning, I will provide you with a written summary or a full plan, depending on your organization's needs.
Consulting in nonprofit development, board training and all aspects of grant and marketing-related writing, I have worked with nonprofit organizations from coast to coast. Since coming back to Sarasota I've been instrumental in acquiring over $200,000 in grants for clients. I am currently working on strategic plans for 2 organizations and resource development plans for 2 organizations. Could your nonprofit organization use this kind of assistance? In these tough times, who couldn't?
I am available to speak with your organization and explore how we might work together in the months and years to come. I believe that partnerships for change can be a positive thing in a nonprofit world, where the number of agencies asking for funding are growing while financial resources are shrinking.
Karen works with small nonprofits, with no professional development staff, and large nonprofits with multi-million dollar budgets. If you are a young or small organization, it's never too early to start thinking about planning for the future. If you are well established, sometimes bringing in a consultant can give new insights or allow expansion of your development department in a cost-effective manner, without hiring additional staff.
